parents & families

Finding out that your beloved child is lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer can be challenging. You may experience many emotions, have lots of worries and concerns, and might find yourself asking lots of questions.

If you're a parent who identifies as LGBTQ and living in Singapore, know that you are not alone.

The following local community resources may be useful if your child identifies as LGBTQ, or you are a parent who identifies as LGBTQ.

SAFE Singapore (Supporting, Affirming & Empowering our LGBTQ family and friends) Support group for parents, families and friends of LGBTQ persons, who believe in a society that accepts, affirms and empowers everyone to participate fully in it, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.

Rainbow Parents SG   Informal social group of LGBTQ parents living in Singapore with their children. The founder, Olivia Chiong, has also a blog - The Chiongs - that documents her journey as a lesbian mum along with her wife, Irene, and their daughters. Olivia has also published a book titled Baby Zoey - Our Search for Life and Family.

4 Relative Strangers is a blog by Mark Koh-Waite, about his life with Ed and their sons as a British-Singaporean family currently living in the UK. You can also read an interview with them here, to promote the production of Tango, which was partly inspired by their experiences of living in Singapore.

Same But Different: A Legal Guidebook for LGBT Couples and Families in Singapore    Volunteer-run non-profit project to bring easily understandable, sustained, free legal advice on some issues faced by LGBT couples & families in Singapore.

Pelangi Pride Centre  LGBTQ library, community space and resource centre run entirely by volunteers. 'Pelangi' is the Malay word for rainbow, since Malay is the national language of Singapore. The centre was started in 2003 by a group of friends.
